Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked, shredded chicken breast
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup cold water

Instructions

  1. Pour chicken broth into a large pot and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and pepper.
  3. Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Gradually add cold water, mixing until a shaggy dough forms. Do not overmix.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly, about 5 times.
  6. Roll the dough out thinly, about 1/8 inch thick.
  7. Cut the dough into small squares or strips for the dumplings.
  8. Drop the dumplings one by one into the simmering broth.
  9. Add the shredded chicken to the pot.
  10. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the dumplings are cooked through. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Notes

  • For richer flavor, use homemade chicken broth.
  • If the stew thickens too much, add a little more broth or water.
