A baked French toast casserole featuring apples and cinnamon flavor.

- 1 loaf (16 ounces) day-old bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, granulated sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and nutmeg until combined.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Press the bread down gently to soak up the liquid.
- Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight.
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
- Arrange the apple slices over the soaked bread.
- In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and melted butter. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples.
- Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed and lightly golden brown.
- Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Serve warm with maple syrup or powdered sugar, if desired.
- Use bread that is slightly stale for the best texture.
