Ingredients

- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
- 1 ripe avocado, sliced
- 4 leaves crisp lettuce
- 2 tomatoes, sliced
- 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
- Mayonnaise or preferred condiment
Instructions
- Mix ground beef with salt and pepper. Form into four equal patties.
- Heat a grill or skillet to medium-high heat.
- Cook patties for 3 to 4 minutes per side for medium doneness, or to your preference.
- During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.
- Lightly toast the hamburger buns.
- Assemble the burgers: spread condiment on the buns, then layer with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese-topped patty, and avocado slices.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- For best flavor, do not overwork the meat when forming patties.
- You can substitute Monterey Jack cheese for cheddar.
